CM girls’ soccer downed by Montour
MONTOURSVILLE, PA – The Central Mountain Lady Wildcat Soccer team once again went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the state Tuesday night and host Montoursvile came out on top, 4-0.
On paper, the first half doesn’t give the credit the Lady Cats deserve as they were under constant pressure and defending as a strong unit. With under three minutes to play, the home side was given a penalty kick. Again, Madison Briggs got a palm to it but it was just too strong and hit the back of the net. A strong first half proved to frustrate the home side.
The second half started off with Montoursville coming out strong; within a couple of minutes they were able to drive into their attacking third and add a second goal. Within about a fifteen minute time span, a lack of concentration from the Lady Cats, the Lady Warriors added two goals and put the game out of reach. The home side put an insurance goal in with about ten minutes left and saw the game out on their senior night.
Afterwards Lady ‘Cat head coach Ryan Veltri said, “You cannot fault the Lady Wildcat work rate. They were on their back foot the entire game and played with grit. When you go toe to toe with one of the best teams in the state, limiting the goals against tally on them was key. They have blown some talented teams away this season and have one of the top attacking players on their side. With a few mistakes and the ability to play against the fresh legs of the home side, the effort from the Lady Wildcats does not go unnoticed. This game was a true test of character and the Lady Wildcat soccer team checked all the boxes.”
The JV team played with only seven players, six field players against ten from the home side. The Lady Wildcats played with their backs against the wall but with game management and a competitive edge found themselves down by one at halftime. This was frustrating to the home side as they were called multiple times for being off-sides. The second half brought heavy and tired legs in which Lady Cats could not keep up with the amount of players the home side had on the field and coming off the bench. A great effort given by every Lady Wildcat Soccer player tonight.
Coach Veltri said In what might go unnoticed, the game against Montoursville had what was a first this season in that two females officiated the match. He called it, “A great representation for our sport and athletes on the women’s side of the game.”
Now 1-7, Central Mountain is to host Midd-West Thursday at 7 p.m. at Malinak Stadium.
