Ruth C. Kaufman – Obituary

Ruth C. Kaufman, 99, of Lock Haven, passed away Friday, July 17, 2020 at RiverWoods Skilled Nursing Center, Lewisburg.

She was born in Danville on May 26, 1921, the daughter of the late Russell and Mary Rhinehart Cardell.

Ruth was a 1939 graduate of Ralpho Township High School and a 1943 graduate of Dickinson College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.

On June 8, 1946, she married Zane Grey Kaufman at Jacob Lutheran Church, Reed’s Station.  They lived in Kentucky, New Jersey and in York before moving to Lock Haven in 1960, where her husband was a chemistry professor at Lock Haven University.  He passed away in 2005.

From 1943 to 1946 Ruth was a research chemist for Mellon Institute of Pittsburgh and at Hooker Chemicals of Niagara Falls, NY. She taught English at Jersey Shore High School from 1966 to 1967 before going to work as a chemist for Drake Chemicals of Lock Haven until her retirement in 1978.

Ruth was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Shamokin Dam. She was highly involved with the Girl Scouts of America for over 20 years, serving in York County, Lock Haven and Castanea. She was also a member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Lock Haven.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan K. Hafey (Peter Galarneau) of Virginia and Amy G. Schol (Stephan Schol) of Germany as well as two grandchildren, Peter Schol and Karin Goecke (Marcel Goecke).  Her brother David predeceased her.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
