Stringer Named New LHU Police Chief

LOCK HAVEN — Tim Stringer has been named director of public safety and chief of police at Lock Haven University as of Aug. 20.

Stringer began his career in the Army and after completing his enlistment as a military policeman, he went through the Police Academy in Harrisburg, while working for the Tyrone Borough Police Department. He went on to work for the then Lewistown Borough Police Department, now Mifflin County Regional Police Department, and finally settling with the Ferguson Township Police Department in Centre County, where he spent the majority of his 30-year career.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Mr. Stringer’s experience, knowledge and leadership ability in this important position,” said William Hanelly, senior vice president and chief operating officer at LHU. “He has the right background and mindset to carry out the work of the Public Safety Department in a student-centered university environment.”

Stringer also has worked as a law enforcement training specialist with Penn State University; as a staff instructor with the PA Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Academy; and as a curriculum developer, designer and writer for Penn State’s Justice and Safety Institute. He also was employed as an adjunct instructor for Harrisburg Area Community College’s (HACC) police academy, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Temple University in their law enforcement training programs and with the National Tactical Officers Association in their tactical program.

Stringer holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from the University of Charleston, West Virginia. He completed Pennsylvania Municipal Police Training and Education certification at HACC’s main campus and has numerous instructor certifications from MPOETC and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to become a part of the Lock Haven University community,” Stringer said. “My goal is to work with the men and women of the Lock Haven University Police Department to make the university a safe place for the students to have fun while getting their education, a safe place for faculty and staff to work and for everyone that comes to campus to feel safe to enjoy this beautiful area.”
