Barger, Lindsay Lead Lady Wildcats over DuBois, 2-0
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It took longer than hoped but the Lady Wildcat varsity soccer team has their first win as they put up 2 first period goals to hand DuBois a 2-0 loss. The scoring came from 2 goals by CM senior, Hunter Barger with junior Violet Lindsay assisting on both scores.
The Lady ‘Cats have struggled in the first couple of weeks in the 2018 season entering today’s contest 0-3. It was a solid mix of experienced the Central Mountain upperclassmen keeping pressure on the DuBois defense and solid defensive play all around for the Lady Wildcats to pitch the shutout.
Barger scored her first goal at the 7:36 mark of the first period when Lindsay passed her the ball. The DuBois keeper played the ball well but failed to finish the stop as the ball rolled unceremoniously into the back of the net to put Central Mountain up 1-0.
It was only about 6 minutes later with 26:29 remaining in the first period when Barger and Lindsay struck again to set the 2-0 lead.
Central Mountain coach, Cole Black made good use of his bench to keep fresh legs on the field throughout the game as the late summer temperatures increased and the humidity increased. That effort from the Lady Wildcat bench was very workman like as DuBois would attempt to get back into the game but were turned away on each occasion.
Today’s game was a welcome respite for CM keeper, Hailey Swortwood as she had relatively few touches on the day with her defense holding solid in front of her for the entire game.
With the win, Central Mountain is now 1-3 on the season, 0-3 in the PHAC.
The Lady Wildcats will return to action on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018 when they travel to Altoona for a non-league contest with the Lady Mountain Lions.
