Wildcats Shutout Montoursville 5-0
Breon One-Hits Warriors
MONTOURSVILLE — Coach Mike Kramer could do nothing but rave about his Central Mountain (8-1) pitching staff, his laudatory comments coming moments after today’s 5-0 win at Montoursville (1-4).
It was the Wildcats’ sixth shutout win, part of an 8-1 start to the season. Today it was junior Landon Breon’s turn to shine. All he did was pitch a complete game 1-hitter, striking out 10 while walking one. The lone Warrior hit was a soft groundball up the middle in inning number three. Breon surrendered his lone walk in that inning but Montour couldn’t advance its runners past second and had only one other base runner in the contest, off CM’s only error of the game.
Meanwhile Breon was backed by great defense. Coach Kramer noted particularly a running catch from right-fielder Asher Corl and a diving catch in the gap from centerfielder Brandon Miller. For Breon it was his second complete game win, both shutouts.
Kramer called his pitching a “luxury,” stating he has confidence in everyone he uses, noting all five who have performed on the mound so far this year, Breon, Toner Corl, Alex Garbrick, Cole Reeder and Ethan Watkins. He said, “They are all solid, throw strikes and mix their pitches, giving us a chance to win.” Their collective earned run average is well below 1.00 for the season.
The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the second, using a single from Wyatt Koch, a balk and an RBI single from Watkins for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way into the sixth when Central Mountain plated two more, using a single from Talon Falls, a single from Isaac Porter; with Watkins at the plate Falls moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an overthrow from the Warrior catcher. Watkins doubled in Porter for the second run of the inning.
CM added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Miller doubled and Asher Corl singled. One run scored on a Montoursville error, the other on an RBI single from Koch.
Meanwhile Breon was all but untouchable. He retired the last 10 Warrior batters in a row, striking out six of the last seven.
Falls and Koch each finished with two singles, Watkins with a single and double. Porter had a single, Miller a double and Asher Corl with his single.
The win sets up a Thursday showdown with Williamsport. Current MaxPreps rankings have the 7-0 Millionaires at #2 in the state, Central Mountain at #7. The game will be played in Williamsport tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats have a home date Friday with Heartland Conference rival Jersey Shore.
