Lock Haven Police Department Student/Driving Safety Announcement:
The 2025–2026 school year begins this week for some students and next week for others, and as your police department, ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority.
Our children will soon be walking to school, standing at bus stops, and riding school buses. We ask every driver to stay alert, slow down, and follow the law.
Pennsylvania School Bus Safety Rules:
Under Pennsylvania law, you must stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus that has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended:
- STOP on all directions of travel when the bus is loading or unloading students, unless there is a physical barrier or a clearly divided highway separating your lane from the bus.
- Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached a safe location.
- Yellow flashing lights mean that the bus is preparing to stop—slow down and prepare to stop.
- Failure to stop for a school bus can result in a $250 fine, five points on your driving record, and a 60-day license suspension.
Enforcement Notice:
Lock Haven City Police officers will be strictly enforcing Pennsylvania’s Vehicle Code, especially during school bus operation hours. School zones will also be fully active and monitored for speeding and unsafe driving.
Cell Phone Reminder!:
Under Pennsylvania law, drivers are prohibited from holding and using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. This includes texting, scrolling, or talking without hands-free technology.
Let’s work together to keep our kids safe. Drive with caution, obey the law, and stay distraction-free. Together, let’s make the 2025–2026 school year a safe one for everyone.
