Renovo Police Department News:

Scam Alert: Chapman Township Resident Defrauded of Nearly $8,000

On August 14, 2025, the Renovo Police Department was called to investigate an incident of fraud and theft involving an elderly resident of Chapman Township. The victim was on the phone with an individual he believed to be a customer service representative for a company offering technical support. The “representative” was able to gain access to the victim’s computer and bank account remotely. After first attempting to convince the victim to send Bitcoin to make a payment, the representative then convinced the victim to withdraw nearly $8,000 from his bank account, package the cash in a box, and mail it via UPS next-day delivery to an address in another state. The Renovo Police Department is continuing the investigation into the matter.

Residents are strongly advised to remain vigilant against scams, which often involve suspicious circumstances that seem unusual, raise concerns, or cause doubt about the instructions being given. A legitimate and reputable business will never request that you send large amounts of cash through the mail as payment.

If you receive a phone call that feels questionable, seems suspicious, or sounds “too good to be true,” end the call immediately without sharing personal information or sending money to an unknown individual. If the call is legitimate, you always have the option to verify it and return the call later.

Scammers often use intimidation tactics, such as threatening arrest or other consequences, insisting you cannot hang up, and pressuring you to act immediately, all of which are classic signs of a scam.
