Nittany Lion Wrestler Greg Kerkvliet Named B1G Wrestler of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State Nittany Lion senior+ Greg Kerkvliet has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for the week ending Jan. 12, 2025. It is Kerkvliet’s first award of the year and the seventh for Penn State this season (including freshmen of the week). Kerkvliet shares wrestler of the week laurels with Maryland’s Jaxon Smith.

Kerkvliet opened up Penn State’s dominating shutout win over Big Ten foe Michigan State with a fast fall in the first minute of his match. Kerkvliet took Spartan Max Vanadia down three times in less than sixty seconds before locking up a cradle and getting the fall at the 0:56 mark. Kerkvliet’s pin was one of six for Penn State in the 55-0 shutout victory in sold out Rec Hall.

His pin was one of six for the Nittany Lions in what was a record tying victory for Penn State. The 55-point margin of victory ties the all-time largest in Nittany Lion wrestling history. Kerkvliet is now 10-0 on the year with five pins and five technical falls.

The Nittany Lions are 7-0 overall, 1-0 B1G. Penn State heads to Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 17, for a dual meet in Lincoln against the Cornhuskers. The Big Ten Network national telecast is set to start at 9 p.m. Eastern (8 p.m. local).
