LHU Swimming competes on final day of PSAC Championships
CARLISLE – The Lock Haven women’s swimming team returned for the third day at the 2023-24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship at the Keystone Aquatics Center in Carlisle, Pa. on Friday (Feb. 16).
The Bald Eagles concluded the four-day championship event on Saturday night. Lock Haven wrapped up a successful week and finished with 67 more team points than last season.
“Overall we are very happy with our performances at PSACs,” Head Coach Jerry Hammaker said. “We have shown grit and determination and have proven to be small, but fierce all season. It’s great that we graduate no seniors and bring everyone back next season. We are looking forward to confirming our recruiting class over the next few months and being not quite as small, but even more fierce next season!”
Prior to the final session, junior Sydney Houck (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) was named PSAC Scholar Champion for her efforts in the pool and in the classroom.
The Bald Eagles put together another strong showing that featured a pair of athletes who reached the finals in their individual events. Houck is a health science major with a pre-physician assistant track and holds a perfect 4.00 GPA.
On the day, Houck continued her run of reaching the finals, as she dropped time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a swim of 2:29.51 to reach the B final. Houck returned for the final and placed 14th overall with a swim of 2:30.12.
Holly Cleworth (Cape Town, Western Cape; South Africa/Springfield Convent of the Holy Rosary) reached the finals in the 200-yard backstroke with a personal-best time of 2:29.51. Cleworth dropped even more time in the final event, placing 10th overall with a swim of 2:30.12.
Alaina Cane (Bellfonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) ended her season strong, placing 37th in the 100-yard freestyle with a personal-best swim of 55:01.
To cap off the championship meet, the quartet of Nora Craig (Dover, Pa./Dover), Cleworth, Cane and Houck teamed up in the 4×400-yard freestyle relay to The Bald Eagles placed 12th with a time of 3:41.12, dropping 12 seconds off their time from 2022-23.
Cane broke 55 seconds (54.71) for the first time, while all four swimmers swam personal bests: Craig (56.81), Cleworth (53.47), and Houck (56.43).
