No. 8 Women’s Wrestling soars at Adrian Invitational; Stem & Johnson roll to titles
ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 8 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team returned to action Sunday at the 2023 Adrian College Women’s Wrestling Invitational, hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, and the Bald Eagles dominated the day behind individual champions Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle) and Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan).
Stem, ranked second nationally, went 5-0 with five tech falls and won the 143-pound title.
Johnson was a perfect 5-0 and won the 170-pound bracket behind two pins and three tech falls.
The Bald Eagles sent 17 women to the mats and finished second overall in the 23-team field. In all, nine Lock Haven wrestlers placed.
Nationally-ranked – No. 3 – Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) finished second at 109. Her only loss came in the finals and she finished the day 4-1 overall with two pins and two techs.
Lock Haven put on a clinic at 170 as Johnson took down teammate Azariah Moore (Montross, Va./Westmoreland) in the finals. Moore was 4-1 with a tech fall and two pins, with her only loss coming in the finals to Johnson.
Victoria Smith (El Centro, Calif./Brawley Union) placed fourth at 123 after going 4-2 with three techs and a pin.
Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) was fourth (191) after going 4-2 with two pins.
Isabella DeVito (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) and Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) each went 4-2 and tied for fifth at 123. DeVito was 4-2 with three pins and Sherer was 4-2 with three pins and a tech fall.
Emma Heslin (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) was seventh (101) after a 3-2 day that included two tech falls and a pin.
The Bald Eagles will open the dual portion of their schedule at home on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. vs. No. 22 Elmira.
