Beech Creek Celebrates Sesquicentennial
BEECH CREEK – The weatherman cooperated and Beech Creek staged a successful 150th anniversary celebration on Saturday.
It was a fun day, filled with activities. Some 300 people signed the commemorative book that was buried with the time capsule that will be opened 50 years from now. According to prime event organizer/borough council member Lynn Gray, about a hundred people toured the Beech Creek/Marsh Creek Watershed Heritage Museum, and took tours of the Beech Creek/Blanchard Volunteer Fire Company.
The Beech Creek Wesleyan Church hosted an ice cream social, there was a petting zoo, crafts, and the Pennsylvania State Police flew in a helicopter for people to see. The pilot had some local ties as state police sergeant Brian Kunes is the son of long-time former Borough Council member Blaine Kunes.
Beech Creek Mayor Melvin Coakley emceed a brief ceremony, sharing a few memories and accepting a congratulatory citation from State Rep. Mike Hanna. Borough Council members lined up for a photo afterwards, and then a community photo was taken with people standing in front of the borough building.
