Montour downs CM girls soccer
BALD EAGLE TOWNWHIP, PA – The Lady Wildcat soccer team welcomed District 4 powerhouse Montoursville to Malinak Stadium Thursday night and the visitors had to work hard to go home with a 4-1 win.
Montoursville came to Malinak on a nine-game win streak and having only one loss to returning state champions Central Columbia. The Lady Wildcat’s have struggled in league play but came into the match ready to play. The first half had a few big chances for both teams, the home side had the first big moment, but the Lady Warrior goalkeeper made a huge save. Montoursville came back minutes later and scored the first and only goal of the half with almost ten minutes into the game. The Lady Wildcats had two more attacks, one led by Halle Lodek with a perfectly placed set piece but the Lady Warrior goalkeeper once again came up with a big save as the blue and white bombarded the goal. The second came from Lily Hendricks who drove down the right side of the field only to be tackled in the box but the referee stated the defender won the ball.
The second half started in favor of Montoursville. In about a minute’s span, the Lady Warriors netted three goals to put the game out of reach. The Lady Cats didn’t give up and continued to hold off the Montoursville attack.
The Lady Wildcats created a chance of their own, the ball played into the attacking third, Morgan Temple got to the ball and played it into the box. The home side pressured the goalkeeper who came out and mishandled the ball. Haleigh Peters got a hold of the ball, collected it with a great first touch and was able to punch the ball into the net for her first goal of her short soccer career. Certainly, a highlight for the home side as Montoursville is tabbed to win the District 4 Championship.
Coach Ryan Veltri said, “A great effort and response after a long week already.”
Next on the schedule is another home game Saturday against Milton with a 2 p.m. varsity start and JV to follow.
The JV team came up against a strong attacking team who were able to put four goals into the net. The highlight of the game came from Cora Seyler who saved a penalty kick and made a double save with the rebound. This was the first game for the JV team in some time so it was great to have them play a full-sided game at home.
