Wildcats Prevail Over Bellefonte 47-26
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — Bellefonte High School brought a 4-1 record and more than a few solid middleweight wrestlers into the Central Mountain gym Thursday night and early on the Red Raiders opened a 17-3 in a dual meet that started at 132 pounds.
But Central Mountain’s balance proved too much as the Wildcats went on an eight-bout tear in opening a 47-17 lead, ending up with a 47-26 triumph on a night CM coach Doug Buckwalter was honored for achieving his 300th coaching win the previous Saturday over Bald Eagle Area.
Caleb Turner (7-6) started the comeback with a 4-2 decision at 160 pounds. Demetri Probst (14-5) followed with a 16-0 bout termination and then the upper-weights took over, picking up four straight pins: Isaac Porter (8-3) came back from injury and started the run; he was followed by Hunter Weaver (13-4), Loc Long (13-6) and Bryce Hanley (15-4) at heavyweight.
The lineup turned over, 106-pounder Geo Barzona (13-3) continued the run, followed by a forfeit for Seth Andrus (14-4). The Red Raiders took the final two bouts but it wasn’t enough as Central Mountain took 9 of the 14 weights and moved to 7-0 on the season.
Next up is the Saturday-Sunday Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South High School, followed by a dual meet next Thursday, home with Selinsgrove.
The win over Bellefonte all but assured Central Mountain the top seed at the District 6 team duals Jan. 31 at Tyrone High School.
Buckwalter was honored before the dual meet, receiving a plaque and a picture of him talking to one of his wrestlers, the photo to be mounted on the gym wall. Among Buckwalter’s 301 victories, 180 of them (against 30 losses) have come from Central Mountain where he has been the head coach since 2004. Overall, at CM and Lock Haven High, his record is 301-87-3.
Many former wrestlers, previously coached by Buckwalter, returned for the special recognition.
