cm-wrestlingFARWELL — It had been a few years since they had the Resolite out at the Bucktail High School gym, but they got it out Saturday afternoon for what turned out to be a great day for scholastic wrestling in Clinton County.

Bucktail dropped its program two years ago and joined Central Mountain High School through a co-op program. As a result Bucktail senior Demetri Probst has been a solid member of the Wildcat wrestling team the last two seasons and officials decided to hold the Central Mountain match against Bald Eagle Area at Bucktail.

With a large contingent of hometown fans looking on, Probst (13-4) did not disappoint, piling up a 13-3 lead before recording a fall in 2:43 against BEA’s Colton Comly. His six points were part of an ultimate 43-21 win for the 6-0 Wildcats.

And there was an extra treat for Wildcat fans: The win was the 300th in head coach Doug Buckwalter’s career; the occasion was marked with a special banner salute at the end of the match as fans and wrestlers from both teams gave him a standing ovation. According to local sports historian Joe Walker, Buckwalter is the first county wrestling coach to notch 300 wins; retired Bald Eagle-Nittany coach Biff Walizer finished with 296.

BEA, now 3-3, did not roll over (as Buckwalter noted in a post-match interview, his squads at Lock Haven High and Central Mountain likely lost more matches to the Eagles than any other opponent).

But Central Mountain was too strong from top to bottom. The match started at 152 pounds and wins came from, among others, Caleb Turner (5-6), picking up a forfeit at that weight.

Other winners were Hunter Weaver (12-4), a major decision; Bryce Bitner (3-0), a major decision; Geo Barzona (12-3), a forfeit; Seth Andrus (13-4), a major; Keanan Bottorf (13-4), a fall; Colton Weaver (12-5), an overtime win; and Emery Watson (11-4), a major.

BEA heavyweight Josh Fye (12-1) used three third period points for a 3-0 win over Bryce Hanley (14-4) in a matchup of two state-ranked heavies. In one of the more exciting bouts, in addition to Colton Weaver’s 5-3 overtime win, Wildcat freshman Tanner Weaver (0-3) lost to Eagle veteran Clint McCaslin (12-3) by a 5-4 score at 145 pounds.

Central Mountain had 23-4 edge in takedowns and took 9 of the 14 weights.

The Wildcats, after going 3-0 this week, are off until next Thursday when they host Bellefonte (3-1). The Red Raiders beat BEA 40-33 on Thursday.
