CMHS take top honors at math competition

BLOOMSBURG, PA – More than 250 students from all over northeastern and central Pennsylvania put their brains to work at the recent Bloomsburg University Math Competition. The annual competition is sponsored by the Mathematics and Digital Sciences Department (MADS). The competition consists of three different categories or games.

The “Quiz Bowl” is a timed head-to-head matchup between two teams with the high scorer moving on to the next round. The “Brainteasers” game involves brainteasers in a test-like format and the scores from individual players are combined for an overall team score. The “Game of 24” involves a dealer who deals out 4 cards from ace to 10. Students then rush to find an equation using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to get the cards to equal 24.

The Central Mountain High School team consisting of Sofia Dressler, Julia Schubach, Abbey Wolfe and Elise Cygan earned first place in the Math 24 Competition. Other CM students showing off their math skills were: Asher Talbot, Pierce Long, Andrew Brown, Andrea Waddell, Taryn Toner and Emily Shetler. Advisors are Mike Kramer and Jonathan Herman.
