CM boys’ soccer shuts out Saint Marys
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP, PA – The Central Mountain boys’ soccer team finished out their regular season schedule on Thursday night with a 5-0 win over visiting Saint Marys.
CM went into halftime up 2-0 with goals by sophomore Lincoln Breon and junior Asher Talbot. Setting up the first goal, senior defender Ben Fortescue cut inside on the dribble and found Breon in stride down the left side, who calmly placed the ball in the far side netting for the lead. Breon would then become the provider on the next goal, beating his defender on the left side before driving a ball into the box for Talbot to finish. This was Breon’s 6th assist of the season.
Talbot started the scoring in the second half. Freshman Griffin Confer dribbled into the box and poked the ball towards the goal line, as Talbot would do enough to get it across as he battled with a Flying Dutch defender to make it 3-0. These were Talbot’s 4th and 5th goals of the season.
Junior Peyton Jones would tack on his team leading 11th goal with a phenomenal solo goal to make it 4-0, dribbling 40 yards and beating multiple defenders before calmly placing it in the net.
Freshman Dylan Bechdel found the back of the net for the third goal of his career, finishing into the side netting with just five seconds remaining, off of a Talbot assist.
Juniors Zane Cooper and Pierce Long controlled the midfield all evening. Putting pressure on Flying Dutch attackers in the midfield and winning possession back, before starting many of the Wildcats forward attacks. On nights like this the box score does not do them justice as to how important they are to the squad.
The backline held strong all night. Senior Braylon Gentzel and junior Bronson Brungard controlled the center of the defense and limited the chances. Cole Cooper, Ben Fortescue, Isaiah Brinker, Isaiah Conoway, and Taylor Heaton were in as the outside backs all night, keeping fresh legs and the shutout.
Senior Kyle Stahl finished his fifth shutout of the season in goal, making six saves.
With the win, the boys have won five of their last seven as they head into the District 6 AAAA playoffs. They will await final word on their first-round opponent as they hope to improve upon last year’s AAA finals appearance.
