CM boys’ soccer notches road win over Shamokin
COAL TOWNSHIP, PA – Traveling to Shamokin on Wednesday night, the Central Mountain boys’ soccer team looked to bounce back after their loss on Monday. Monday’s game with Jersey Shore saw some great play, but the Wildcats were unable to capitalize in their opportunities. Coach Billy Hook, after the 6-1 Wednesday win over Shamokin, said “The boys capitalized phenomenally tonight.”
Peyton Jones recorded a hat trick to put his team leading goal total at seven for the season. He also assisted twice, for his team leading fifth assist.
Asher Talbot returned after missing five games to injury, and he felt right at home. A left footed rocket found the side netting in the first half for his second goal of the season.
Braylon Gentzel scored his first career goal off a corner kick, and also recorded his first career assist on a beautifully played thru ball from the backline to Jones for the team’s sixth and final goal.
The goal of the night went to sophomore Lincoln Breon, following some well-crafted counter play by the Wildcats. Griffin Confer intercepted a Shamokin throw in and found Talbot, who beat one defender before playing Jones. Unselfishly, Jones opened to his left side and found Breon making a perfectly timed run and finishing with the one time left footed shot. It was Lincoln’s first goal of the season, and the second of his young career.
Junior Jack Grieco added two assists on the evening.
Play continued to be at a high level, and the Wildcats were able to match that with great energy and focus. They will try to get a second win in a row on Saturday, when District 6 neighbor Tyrone comes to Malinak Stadium for an 11 a.m. contest.
