Laurelly Fork Fish Nursery has Huge Turnout for Fish Stocking
CHAPMAN TOWNSHIP, PA – On Saturday, March 26 a large number of volunteers showed up at the Laurelly Fork co-op Fish Nursery in Chapman Township to help with the annual trout stocking into seven local streams.
Children had the opportunity to visit the nursery and help net the fish. Volunteers then loaded their trucks with tanks and hauled them to streams where they placed them in the water, bucket by bucket. It’s not always an easy task getting the fish to the streams but the volunteers were successful.
A total of 8000 brown trout were stocked in local streams including Cooks Run, County Line, Drury Run, Halls Run, Hyner Run and the upper and lower part of the left hand branch of Young Womans Creek. The local area counts on the Nursery to provide fish to the local streams.
With the statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day being the same day, it makes for a perfect opportunity for the youth to hook their first fish of the season.
Each year, after the volunteers are finished stocking the streams they return to the nursery and enjoy food and drinks donated by Keith Harris.
The Nursery is a co-op between Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association and the PA Fish Commission.
Pennsylvania statewide Opening Day of Trout Season this year is on the first Saturday in April, which will occur on Saturday, April 2.
