Words of Grace – Oct. 23, 2014
A young boy from the city of New York went on a family vacation to the country. Growing up in the big city, he was more accustomed to man-made wonders than the marvels of nature found elsewhere.
It was there in the country that the child saw his first rainbow. His reaction as he gazed upon the gorgeous sight was one of wonder and perplexity.
After commenting about how beautiful the rainbow was, he asked, “But Mother, what is it supposed to be advertising?”
Actually, that is a good question. When God first made a rainbow and put it in the sky, it was for a reason. After the earth was destroyed by a universal flood, God said to Noah and Noah’s sons:
“And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11).
Then God told them what the token of the covenant would be. He would set a rainbow in the clouds and would remember that the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh (v.15)
God made a commitment to keep this promise, and the rainbow is the token of God’s faithfulness. “He is faithful that promised” (Hebrews 10:23).
