Second “The View 25K” held at Hyner
HYNER, PA – Several hundred participants took to Hyner Mountain Sunday for a relatively new race among Clinton County’s trail racing series. The View 25K, now in only its second year, challenged participants on a course similar to April’s Hyner View Trail Challenge, but in the fall of the year. Temperatures were crisp and right around the freezing mark for the 9:00 a.m. start from the Western Clinton Sportsman’s Club in Hyner, but the sun and the challenge of the course had everyone warmed up in no time.
A 23-year-old trail runner from California currently living in Syracuse, New York, made his Pennsylvania debut and turned in a time that was more than 20 minutes faster than last year’s first-place finisher. Mason Coppi completed the course in under two hours, with a time of one-hour, 55 minutes.
“It was hard, but a lot of fun and really beautiful,” said Coppi of the course that included a climb up the mountain to the Hyner View overlook and about 3,000 feet of elevation gain over the approximate 15.5-mile course.
David Hedges, age 24, of Ithaca, New York, placed second with a time of 1:57, followed by Samuel Kirk, 39, of Newtown Square, PA, who finished in two hours even.
Well-known trail runner Meira Minard, 48, of State College, was the first female finisher and 27th overall, with a time of 2:49. Minard did not compete in last year’s race, so this was her first time on the course, which she said she really liked.
“It was an amazing day – Craig does an amazing job,” said Minard of Race Director Craig Fleming of the PA Trail Dogs.
Nicole Seuffert, 40, of Lancaster was the second female finisher (40th overall), with a time of 2:56, followed by 27-year-old Rebecca Rees of Buck Hill Falls, PA, who finished 43rd overall, turning in a time of 2:58.
Participants came from 10 different states and the District of Columbia. The youngest was 10-year-old Natalie Rosamilia of Port Matilda, who has competed in a number of races and finished 156th Sunday in three hours, 59 minutes. The oldest finisher was 69-year-old Richard Fillman of Jersey Shore, who finished 146th with a time of 3:53.
In all, close to 300 people completed the course, which had a strict cut-off time due to the shorter daylight hours.
