Millionaires edge CM boys, 2-1

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP, PA – The Central Mountain boys’ soccer team hung with District 4 power Williamsport for the duration of their contest at Malinak Stadium Tuesday, but a late Wildcat run fell just short as the Millionaires went home with a hard-earned 2-1 win.

The Millionaire’s Jimmy Tombor put his team on top, striking at the 32:28 mark of the first half for his team’s first goal and scoring again at the 18:51 mark of the second half to put Williamsport up 2-0. But Central Mountain did not back down and, as ‘Cat Coach Billy Hook noted afterwards, “We went after them.”

Its offense kept in check for much of the game, Central Mountain picked up the pace as the second half continued on. Nathan Brinker had a penalty kick with four minutes to go, but Williamsport’s goal-keep Sam Radulski made the save and a follow-up shot from Peyton Jones missed the mark.

The Wildcats kept the pressure on and scored a goal on a Brinker header, with an assist from Cooper Confer, at the 1:36 mark to make it 2-1, but the home team was denied any solid scoring opportunity as the final seconds ticked away. For Brinker it was his fifth goal of the year.

Coach Hook said, “We played against them very, very well.” He said the team has benefitted from recent hard practices and had some success passing but “needs to get the final pass” to finish up.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-2; Williamsport moved to 2-1. Central Mountain will be back home Thursday, hosting Shikellamy at 7 p.m.
