BUDSTOCK 5th Anniversary this Saturday in Renovo

Unhinged

By Christopher Miller

It has been 5 years since the inaugural BUDSTOCK all-day music festival took off from humble beginnings to the annual power-house event it has become in the Renovo area.

To be expected this year are new bands, vendors, and chances to win gift baskets. Also new in the mix are special, limited edition t-shirts which were designed especially for the event.

This year, for the first time in BUDSTOCK history, in honor of the 5 year anniversary, there will be the presentation of a music award which will be given to two deserving students from Bucktail High School who have an interest in music. The funds for the music award are derived from the sale of t-shirts and raffle tickets for the basket raffles.

As well, the Board of Directors are also in the process of choosing the next recipient of the Community Spirit Award.

BUDSTOCK was started as a Concept of Bud and the dynamics (Bud Hallberg, Paul Mills, Ron Jones, Wayne Stoltz and Gary Eberhard) who thought it would be a neat idea to put on a free live concert (similar to Woodstock), to celebrate their 50 years of music-making. It is a way of giving back to the community for their support over the years and to invite other musicians to take part in the celebration.

The infamous round table at the Sportsman’s Restaurant was “control central,” the scene of many nights of planning. In 2015, when the invite went out to other musicians, the response was overwhelming. BUDSTOCK was to be a one-time event. The Greater Renovo Area Heritage Park was instrumental in providing the venue; Barb Mastriania had a booklet printed in honor of the occasion and handled publicity; Beth Whitty, Tim Horner and Alice Tarr helped with all aspects of BUDSTOCK. Nestlerode Construction Company of Lock Haven along with Smith Construction of Farwell supplied the flatbed trailers for the stage and Mike Smith lit up the area with their portable lighting.

The day (back in 2015) began at 10:45 AM with Captain Kens Gospel band, followed by The Covenant Praise Band, Phase 2 (featuring Gordy Scrimshaw), the Revelation Praise Band, Drocton Hill, Mitch Gavlock, Back Porch String Band, Devon and Blake, Midnight Passage, Lockport Drifters, Bud & the Dynamics and Last Man Standing.

With the chill in the air and the full moon over the Tipple the crowd was huge and enthusiastic until 2 AM.
With such success, the committee decided to make it a yearly event.

Gary continued by reminding us that all of this is being provided by a handful of people who only want to provide a venue for musicians and a receptive audience to enjoy it.

All of this entertainment is free to the public and all of the musicians participating give generously of their time and talents.

Below is information on some of the bands performing at this year’s event:

FRIENDS is a unique, ever-changing cohesive group of musicians performing exclusively for the BUDSTOCK music festival venue. This “over-the-top” group of musicians performed at the first BUDSTOCK music festival as friends of the original “BUD & the DYNAMICS” group, of which BUDSTOCK was conceived. The musicians joining “Bud”s Friends” are: Conny Glicken – vocals, Phil Reeder – guitar/vocals, Terry O’laughlin – guitar/vocals, Bruce Wallace – guitar, Tim Reeves – bass, Heather Haigh – trumpet, Duane Eberhart – Sax, Gary Eberhard – Trombone and Kelly Whitty – Drums.

Reeder on guitar/vocals can fit into any atmosphere; from the light jazz of an intimate cocktail party to rowdy barroom sing-a-longs…and all points in between. Phil has been rocking the local music scene for many years.

Jeff Glicken from Colorado Springs, Colorado will return, once again, to BUDSTOCK to play and sing his original music. He will also be performing at Saint Joseph’s Church the next morning.

Joe Turnowchyk is a lifelong student and performer of music. At 5 years old, he began taking accordion lessons, playing polkas for his family and for performances with an accordion band. Later, around 12, he began taking organ lessons under the same instructor who told him to follow his musical ideas when playing music. That philosophy helped to mold a musician into an interpreter playing the pipe organ for various church services, the piano in songwriting and the accordion for acoustic performances. Joe lives in Lancaster, and is always involved with his family and working as the owner of an architectural design firm for 30 years. He currently is the organist for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Renovo where he also comes to enjoy the outdoors, specifically hunting and fishing.

The local band Unhinged is preparing for BUDSTOCK. A favorite band in the area, their opening set will feature a father/son duo on the drums. Stanley Shank has been a key percussionist for many former bands in the area and his son Brandon is the driving force of Unhinged.

Aneurysm is an alternative three-piece rock band from Liberty, PA. Formed in 2017 by founding members Patrick Schon (lead guitarist/vocalist) and Sam Fuller (bass guitarist), since then evolving their sound into a hard-hitting, “grunge-esque” experience. Within the past four years, Aneurysm has recorded one EP featuring a blend of original and cover songs. Recently Aneurysm has welcomed a new member, Todd Henry, a jazz-style percussionist who has since incorporated his talents into the band. In the near future, Aneurysm hopes to record a full-length album of original music that is reminiscent of the past whilst adding modern takes and emotions.
