Baseball, Softball Return for the Summer

The Clinton County Hammers, a 9-year-old and younger travel team, got some practice on the Mill Hall Little League Field on Monday. The Hammers begin travel ball competition in early July in western Pennsylvania.

LOCK HAVEN – While there will be no official Keystone Little League baseball in the Lock Haven area this summer, there will be plenty of ball opportunities for both boys and girls.

Lock Haven City Council Monday night gave its approval to plans submitted by the local Babe Ruth baseball organization and the Clinton Softball Little League for use of their respective fields this season. For Babe Ruth, it’s Taggart Field along Park Street; for Clinton, it’s the adjacent softball field. Both have been groomed and are ready for play, following city approval of their plans.

Meanwhile practice has already begun at other fields in the area. The Clinton County Hammers, a 9-and-under travel team was at work on the Mill Hall Little League Field. Coaches there said there are also travel teams for ages 10 and 11.

At nearby Mill Hall Community Park, two Babe Ruth teams were dividing practice, a 12-13 team and a 14-15-year-old team. There are three local Babe Ruth teams in the 12-13 group and two in the 14-15 division. There is also expected to be a team for the 16-17 year old group.

The Babe Ruth teams’ home field will be Lock Haven’s Taggart Park. There will be games played against teams from Williamsport at two fields there

As announced last week by Clinton League President Kevin Tripp, some 70 to 90 girls will be involved in softball on three Major League squads, two Minor B teams, one Minor A team and one Junior team.

Area fields are located in Lock Haven, Beech Creek and Booneville. Also, Tripp said, the Castanea Township supervisors have given permission for use of the Little League field along Bald Eagle Creek.

Other likely opponents for the Clinton teams could come from Woolrich, Jersey Shore, Salladasburg and Nippenose.

Lock Haven’s Taggart Field will again serve as the home for local Babe Ruth baseball this summer, after City Council Monday night gave approval for its use. Babe Ruth League play began this week with contests in Williamsport.
