For the Record – August 14, 2014

Dinosaur eggs anyone? …
If you’ve ever wanted to hunt for dinosaur eggs, this is the weekend to do it. On Saturday, Aug. 16 a Red Hill Fossil Festival is scheduled in Chapman Township Municipal Building at 11 o’clock in the morning. Refreshments will be provided (but you can’t have the dinosaur eggs for breakfast) and there will be speakers and museum tours. This should be a fun and interesting event, the first of its kind I think.
Are there police in Renovo?
A Record reader asked me this week if Renovo has police on duty. Mayor Carl Olshefski assures me that yes the borough has police, two officers. If you don’t see them out and about that’s because the men are busy being trained to comply with the county’s crime system.
Where’s summer? …
Am I the only one who hasn’t found summer this year? It just seems to me that it’s been more like fall most of this summer. I shouldn’t ’t complain though because I have hardly run the air conditioner at all, which means I haven’t seen the usual summer increase peak in my electric bills. I awakened early this morning (Tuesday) to rain and it’s raining again tonight. I mention that because when I opened Wayne Short’s newest volume of The History of Renovo, Pennsylvania I opened to page 35. One of the items was dated June 14, 1960. It mentions that no trains were moving through Renovo because continuous rains had caused a series of nine mud and rock slides to block the tracks between Keating and Sinnemahoning. The largest slide was estimated at 100 tons while the other slides were about 10 to 20 tons each.
Where’s Bud? …
Lock Haven’s summer concerts, Fridays and Saturdays, are popular and well attended events. But I notice that Renovo’s Bud & The Dynamics are missing from the schedule this year. Years ago, close to 20 years ago in fact, a group from Renovo sponsored free concerts at 16th Street Park. I remember seeing Corrine King there. At the time Corrine also worked at Fashion Bug in Lock Haven, and I think it was the only women’s dress shop as far as I know. This is probably really showing my age, but I remember a variety of women’s dress shops, some chain stores, others individually owned.
Bud’s at the Sons …
In answer to the question “where’s Bud?” he and the Dynamics are scheduled to be at the Sons of Italy in Renovo Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Greater Renovo Area Heritage Committee. The Heritage Committee is raising money to continue the restoration of 530 Erie Avenue, the former Bruno shoe store building that is now the Heritage Headquarters. The public is welcome and encouraged to join the committee and the band at the Sons of Italy for an evening of fun and some prizes. The committee is currently asking for donations of prizes or theme baskets to chance off at the event. If by chance you or your business is willing to donate a prize or theme basket please contact Alice Tarr at 570-923-0348 or Barb Mastriania at 570-923-2927.
Snug to play for WCCR fundraiser …
Clinton County Commissioner Joel Long and his band, SNUG, will present a fundraiser dance to benefit Western Clinton County Recreation Authority (the recreation center in Renovo) on Friday, Sept. 12 at the Railhouse Lounge, in Yesterday’s. The doors open at 9 p.m. The show begins at 10 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door and all proceeds benefit WCCRA. Commissioner Long attends most of the recreation center board of director’s meetings. Greg Lucabaugh, an owner of Yesterdays serves on the center’s board and both men devote much time and energy to the center.
Music Fest a hit …
If you’ve never attended the Kettle Creek Music Fest, pencil it in for next summer. I attended it for the first time this year, and found it thoroughly impressive. The field is gigantic, there are numerous vendors and I think several thousand people attend it. This year’s proceeds will all be given to Veteran’s groups. There’s good food available and hours of really good music from some great bands. I was there Friday and there were hundreds of people there. I was told there would be triple or more there on Saturday.
Another ukelin …
Bud Hallberg of Farwell tells us that a resident of Farwell has given him a ukelin, an old fashioned instrument (circa 1920s) that’s a combination of the violin and the Hawaiian ukelele.
It is the second ukelin to surface in recent weeks. A few weeks ago Chapman Supervisor Tim Horner bought one at a yard sale.
