Lock Haven University Nursing Students Gain Experience at UPMC

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Nursing students at Lock Haven University now have the option to observe and serve alongside nurses at Haven Place on the campus of UPMC Lock Haven as part of their clinical education rotations. Haven Place joins UPMC Lock Haven as a designated observation site for student nurses in the region.

“Through our partnership with Lock Haven University, UPMC’s goal is to provide students with an immersive experience highlighting all aspects of nursing,” said Susan Mills, director of nursing, Haven Place. “By not only offering student nurses hands-on experience shadowing and providing care at the bedside with our nurses in a hospital setting, but also including these same experiences in a long-term care setting, our hope is that the students will gain a better understanding of the specialty care and skills required for this growing patient population.

The demand nationally for nurses remains high, and as the U.S. population continues to age, we’re seeing exponential growth in demand for nurses with a passion for long-term care.”

Nursing students are required to complete clinical rotations in various health care settings, including long-term care to obtain their degree. There are currently 12 nursing students in the program offered through Lock Haven University’s main campus.

“Having the ability to complete my rotations in Lock Haven is great,” said Laura Fasey, LPN, and nursing student at Lock Haven University. “The program offered at UPMC in Lock Haven is very convenient. I can go to class, complete my rotations, and continue to work part-time as an LPN in Williamsport with minimal travel, making it all manageable.”
