Clinton Rolls to District 12 Crown with 17-1 Win over Hepburn Lycoming

BEECH CREEK – In a delayed start that included a venue change, the Clinton 8-10 All-Stars finally earned the District 12 Little League softball title for 2019 with a dominating 17-1 win over Hepburn Lycoming.

Just as the time approached for introductions at the Clinton Field on Myrtle St. in Lock Haven, a heavy afternoon rain shower passed over the field. When the rain stopped and after much effort, it was realized that the field could not be prepared in time to complete the game before darkness.

After a quick call to Keystone Little League president, Rich Lyons, officials and both teams agreed to move the game to Blaine Kunes Memorial Park in Beech Creek to play under the lights. Volunteers from all three leagues and even the umpires pitched in to prepare the field for play.

Clinton was eager to get the bats going and were very satisfied with the coin toss to be the visiting team for the game. Clinton made it to the championship game by shutting out both Williamsport and Hepburn by identical 19-0 scores earlier in the tournament.

Once the game began, Clinton continued their offensive dominance by plating 3 runs in the top of the first inning, then adding four more runs in the top of the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, the flood gates opened for Clinton as they sent 14 batters to the plate and tacked on 10 more runs. That inning was highlighted by not one, but two in-the-park home runs for Camdyn Weaver.

Weaver led off the inning with a shot just inside the first base foul line that went all the way to the fence with Weaver sprinting around the diamond before Hepburn could stop her. Weaver duplicated her leadoff effort in her second at-bat of the inning, this time drilling a shot all the way to the fence in right-center field to once again motor around the bases for another score.

Eva Sockman had base hit and a triple for Clinton while Cheyenne Weaver and Ellyn Scarborogh had a base hot each.

Clinton was very patient in the batter’s box, collecting a whopping 18 walks in the game.

Sockman received the nod to start in the circle for Clinton allowing 4 walks and striking out 5 Hepburn Lycoming batters in two innings of work. Camdyn Weaver pitched the last 3 outs yielding 2 walks and striking out 3 of the 5 batters she faced.

With the win, Clinton will next host the Section 3 tournament next week at the Clinton Field.
