Mifflinburg’s Martin No-No’s Lady Wildcats
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Sometimes you just have to credit the opposition. That was the case Tuesday as Mifflinburg whitewashed the Central Mountain softball team by a 10-0 score. The visitors rode the left arm of starter Vanessa Martin who pitched a 6-inning no-hitter.
A veteran team, Mifflinburg has established itself as a District 4 Class 4A power this year. They are off to a 3-0 start with wins over Shamokin, 12-0; Shikellamy, 16-2; and now Central Mountain, 10-0, all Heartland Conference foes.
Martin was Mifflinburg’s lead pitcher a year ago and the Lady Wildcat senior showed why against Central Mountain. She allowed only four base-runners, three walks and a final inning groundball error off the glove of her third baseman. She kept Lady ‘Cat batters off balance, effectively mixing fastballs with off-speed pitches.
Meanwhile Mifflinburg broke open a tight game, 3-0 after four, with six fifth inning runs, taking advantage of two walks and three Central Mountain errors to break things open. Martin helped her own cause with three singles and two RBIs.
Central Mountain could not get its offense untracked, picking up walks in innings one, three and five. Pinch-hitter Mallory Eck reached base in the sixth inning on Mifflinburg’s lone error. Martin struck out only two batters but her defense was solid throughout.
Madi Knepp and Jenni Skow shared pitching duties for CM, Knepp charged with the loss. Central Mountain falls to 2-3 on the young season and will try to bounce back Thursday, April 4, a trip to Jersey Shore (3-0).
