Woodward Elementary Honors Heroes

Among the hometown heroes recognized at Woodward Elementary School on Thursday was state police CPL Brian Evarts. Students presented certificates of appreciation to the many first responders. The presentation was special for Evarts as it came from his son and kindergartner Landon Evarts and daughter/second grader Addisyn Evarts; both came to school dressed for the special day.

DUNNSTOWN – The student body at Woodward Elementary School had to wait two days to observe the schools sixth annual September 11th ceremonies as Keystone Central schools were closed until Thursday, Sept. 13, but the school-wide ceremony was again a success.

Program master of ceremonies and 5th grade teacher Brad McCloskey told the student assemblage the event was a day to not forgot those who lost their lives on September 11, 200l, but also to honor first responders from that day and local first responders.

Those present Thursday included officers from Woodward Township, Lock Haven and state police; firemen from Dunnstown and Woolrich; soldiers from the school’s nearby Troop H Support Squadron, 278th ACR; and local EMTs. Each received a special certificate of thanks from student body members.

McCloskey noted the day was also one to mark good deeds performed across the country and many Woodward students shared their acts of kindness, from baking cookies for first responders to raising money for the SPCA.

The school announced a food drive to run from Friday, Sept. 14 to Friday, Sept. 21. Students may bring in cans of food to be provided to the local Life Center. The program concluded with an opportunity for the Woodward students to get an up-close look at emergency equipment onsite for the special program.
