Central Mountain Softball Earns Senior Day Win Over Shik, 9-1

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – The Central Mountain softball team used the occasion of Tuesday’s Senior Day to play one of its better all-around games this season, a solid 9-1 win over visiting Shikellamy.

The victory for the Lady Wildcats was their fifth in a row, running their season mark to 11-4 after a 2-and-3 start. Shikellamy dropped to 6-9 with the loss.

The Lady ‘Cats put everything together, pitching, hitting and fielding and the senior members of the squad played a major role in the effort. Senior Cait Brush was superb in the circle, tossing a complete game 2-hitter. She was backed by great defense, including a spectacular game-ending over-the-shoulder running catch from junior centerfielder Morgan Wetzel.

The hitting was solid, piling up 15 hits off three Shik pitchers, including homeruns from senior Skylar Smith and freshman Riley Houser.

The four starting seniors all contributed: Brush with her pitching effort, a single, two runs and an RBI; Smith with a single and her homerun; Josie Dershem with three singles and three RBIs; and Linzy Carlson who chipped in with two singles and an RBI. The team’s fifth senior, Maegan Miller, was unable to play due to injury.

Underclassmen at the bottom of the CM batting order got the offense rolling in the bottom of the second. The freshmen Alyssa Fisher and Houser singled, as did junior Madalyn Bechdel. Brush drove in the game’s first run with a groundout and Dershem drove a two-out single for two more runs, 3-0 CM.

Shik would get its only run in the fourth when Kierston Long doubled and Katlyn Kreamer singled, Long scoring when Central Mountain committed its lone error on an overthrow after Kreamer’s hit.

Central Mountain added two in the fourth off Houser’s homerun, followed by a single from Bechdel, a groundout and another RBI single from Dershem. The fifth saw Smith’s homerun and three more came across in the sixth: Brush and Dershem singled and came home on a Maddie Knepp double. Knepp was then singled in by Carson.

Others in the CM hit parade included Houser finishing with a 3-for-3 game on the homerun and two singles and Bechdel with two singles.

The Lady Wildcats will be right back in action Wednesday, hosting Shamokin (9-4), and Thursday at Altoona (0-15).
