Chuck Probst ‘Goes Yard’ on Senior Day

Chuck Probst
GETTYSBURG  – Senior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) broke the school record and tied the Centennial Conference record for hits in a game, finishing 6-for-6 as the Gettysburg College baseball team closed out the season on a high note, topping Messiah College 15-6 in a non-conference tilt Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Sneed had twice tied the school record for hits in a game (five) in 2016, but became the first Bullet in the long history of the program to hit safely six times. He ended up missing the cycle by a home run, finishing with a double, triple, three runs, and four RBIs.

Five additional seniors enjoyed memorable performances in their final collegiate appearance. Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) registered one of the top outings of his career, allowing just four hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high 13. With his seventh punchout of the game, he also became just the fifth player in school history to hit 200 career strikeouts, joining Brian Golden ’88 (310), Ryan Taylor ’13 (251), Richard Hawkins ’60 (229), and Marc Favieri ’90 (226).

Senior Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) blasted his first home run of the season and finished with four runs scored while classmate Jack Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) scored three times. In addition, senior Tyler Sadowski (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) started a catcher and drove in a run.

Sophomores Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) also posted big days at the plate for Gettysburg, which outhit Messiah 18-11. Murphy went 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs while Augustus finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Bullets backed DeMartino with four runs over the first three innings, which included a towering two-run homer from Probst over the 375 sign in left-center in the second. His long ball was the eighth of his career, placing him in a four-way tie for eighth in school history.

Gettysburg broke it open with 11 runs from the fourth through the sixth. The Bullets scored three in the fourth before plating four in both the fifth and the sixth, pushing their lead to 15-2.

Sneed made his final plate appearance with two outs in the seventh and smoked a single back through the box for his record-setting hit.

In the meantime, DeMartino (4-4) was in complete control, allowing just one hit through the first five innings. Messiah (15-21) scored its runs in the sixth on a two-run homer from Kyle Wickenheiser, but DeMartino shut out the Falcons in the seventh before leaving the game.

DeMartino fanned the side twice en route to his 17th career victory, moving him into a tie for seventh in school history.

The Falcons added four runs in the eight before Gettysburg set the final score with a run in the bottom half.

Freshman Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for the Bullets, shutting out the Falcons on two hits.
