LHU Softball Caps Perfect (20-0) PSAC Central Play Run; Lindsey, Fellow Seniors Honored
LOCK HAVEN – Saturday saw a perfect ending to the regular season for the Lock Haven University softball team (34-10, 20-0 PSAC Central) as the Bald Eagles swept visiting Mansfield University (11-16, 7-13 PSAC Central) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central action. The Bald Eagles won 4-0 and 2-1 to cap a perfect 20-0 run through PSAC Central play.
Lock Haven became the first PSAC softball team to sweep divisional play since California (Pa.) was perfect in Western Division play in 2014. Since 1993, it’s only the eighth time the feat has been accomplished by a PSAC institution in the sport of softball.
The 20 wins are also the most in the history of the PSAC Central Division and break Bloomsburg’s 2016 record of 19 (19-1).
The two wins also helped Lock Haven reach the 34-win mark (34-10) and extend the Bald Eagles’ most recent win streak to 12.
The Haven also finished a perfect 14-0 at home.
As part of the regular season finale, the Bald Eagles honored their five seniors: Amanda Loar (Barto, Pa./Boyertown), Gabrielle Henson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Taryn Williams (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia), Moriah Lindsey (Woolrich, Pa./Central Mountain) and Susan Janfrancisco (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth).
Of special note, Lock Haven finished the regular season with 92 stolen bases, just eight away from the single-season school record of 100 (2002).
LHU, the 2018 PSAC Central Champions, will return to action at next week’s PSAC Tournament.
GAME 1: W, 4-0
Leading the way in game one was Casey Carpenter (Spring Brooke, Pa./North Pocono) who went 2-3 with two RBI’s. Seven other Bald Eagles recorded a hit in the game as Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) also recorded two hits.
Lindsey and Traci Kromko (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) also each drove in one run each.
On the mound for The Haven was Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) who picked up her 16th win of the year as she went all 7 innings and struck out nine while allowing only two hits.
GAME 2: W, 2-1
In game two, it was Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) and Carpenter who came up big for Lock Haven. Caputo drove in a run in the first and then Carpenter stepped up in a huge way as she doubled down the right field line to score Caputo from first and give LHU the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) was the starting pitcher and she went 6 innings scattering four hits and fanning three batters. Slattery came on to pitch the last inning as she picked up her PSAC leading fourth save as she did not allow a hit and struck out one.
