Wildcats Advance Four to Regional Semifinals; in Second Place
ALTOONA – The first night of the PIAA Northwestern Regional tourney was one of some rewarding victories coupled with some tough losses for the Central Mountain wrestling team.
When day one ended Friday night the Wildcats has advanced four wrestlers into the Saturday afternoon semifinals while another seven will be in consolation action Saturday morning.
The showing left CM in second place with 47.5 points, pre-tourney favorite Erie Prep leading with 55 points.
The four semi-finalists include junior Johnny Shreffler at 113 pounds. He came from behind for a 6-4 overtime win over Clayton Leidy of State College. Leidy had defeated Shreffler by a 3-1 score earlier in the year.
Other CM semi finalists include Seth Andrus at 132; he won a 2-1 decision over Andrew Stark of Erie Prep and Logan Long at 145 who picked up two falls Friday, including a quarterfinal pin in 1:34 over Jack O’Connor of Allderdice.
The Wildcats’ final semi finalist is heavyweight Jake Edwards. The CM junior had two first period falls, including a quarterfinal deck job in 1:04 over Williamsport’s Ethan Williamson.
The most difficult loss came to Tanner Weaver at 170, a reversal at the buzzer for St. Mary’s Zach Becker for a 4-2 win.
Wrestling resumes Saturday with consolations at 10 a.m., semi-finals at 12:30 p.m. and the finals to follow the Parade of Champions at 6:15 p.m.
Top three finishers at each weight qualify for the PIAA championships at Hershey next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
