Broncos Take EWL Showdown from LHU, 22-12
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale (Oklahoma State) took down Rider’s Chad Walsh in the marquee bout of the night, but Marsteller’s huge win wasn’t enough to spark the Bald Eagle upset as the No. 19 Broncs (10-2, 4-0 EWL) took home a 22-12 win over the No. 23 Lock Haven University wrestling team in a fierce Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) battle Saturday night.
The Bald Eagles (9-2, 2-1 EWL) also got wins from No. 16 Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco) at 149 and No. 31 Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) at 184.
Marsteller’s huge win at 165 pounds headlined the night for Lock Haven as he took down Walsh, 8-4. With the win he improved to 31-1 on the season.
Walsh, a two-time All-American entered the night at 16-0, but Marsteller was clinical in victory and proved to be way too much for Walsh. Marsteller entered the night ranked No. 8 in the NCAA coaches’ panel rankings No. 6 by InterMat. Walsh was tabbed at No. 4 in the NCAA coaches’ panel rankings and No. 3 in the latest InterMat poll.
Marsteller and Walsh were scoreless after one period, but Marsteller went to work in the second and led 4-2 after two. Marsteller earned a quick third-period reversal and cruised to a dominating 8-4 win.
At 149, Perry secured a hard-fought 8-2 win. Perry dominated every aspect of the bout and put the Bald Eagles on the board after Rider opened the dual with three straight wins despite strong efforts from the Bald Eagles at 125, 133, and 141.
Hazel rounded out Lock Haven’s winners. Hazel was awarded a win after Wayne Stinson was disqualified at 184 pounds.
At 125, Rider’s J.R. Wert, ranked No. 28 edged Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) 6-5 in a hard-fought effort that came down the wire. At 133 Rider’s Anthony Cefolo, ranked No. 30, edged DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) 4-2. Those two tight Rider wins certainly proved valuable in the winning effort.
At 141 in a battle of two nationally-ranked wrestlers, No. 29 Tyson Dippery used a strong second-period to down No. 24 Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), 7-1.
Lock Haven will be right back in action Sunday, Jan. 28 at Columbia in the first ever dual meet between the Bald Eagles and Lions. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
