Lady Wildcats Lead Early but Fall to ‘Shore, 49-27

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – The Central Mountain girls basketball team played some of its best ball of the season in the first quarter Friday night, but it was not enough as an experienced Jersey Shore team came home a winner by a 49-27 final.

Senior Talyn Fredericks hit an early deuce and junior Marissa Moyer drained two three-pointers and Central Mountain raced to an early 8-0 lead. But Jersey Shore collected itself, stepped up its defense and went on a 17 point run from the mid-point of period one well into the second quarter; at that point the Lady Wildcats trailed 17-8 and while they battled all game long, ‘Shore had too much to overcome.

Spurred by a 19-point second quarter, JS opened a 27-14 halftime lead. Their standout junior Hannah Kauffman, held to two points in the first quarter, erupted for 10 in the second, on the way to a 16-point night. CM’s Taylor Fletcher, one of three seniors honored before the game on Senior Night, led the home team with 8 points, Moyer next with 7. The other two senior squad members, Talyn Fredericks and Hayley Bauer each scored two points, as did juniors Katie Burrows and Morgan Wetzel. Madison Courter contributed four points off the bench.

Coach Terrance Green was pleased with the effort, calling his team’s 8-0 start” outstanding.” It was by far the best start to a game this season for the winless (0-15) Lady Wildcats. Green said he was “very happy all around,” said his team is “getting there…and definitely improved” over the December go-round with ‘Shore, won by the Lady Bulldogs by a 55-24 score. Jersey Shore improved to 11-5 with the victory.

Central Mountain will travel to Tyrone Monday and host Shikellamy on Tuesday. Jersey Shore won Friday’s JV game by a 44-31 score.
