Central Mountain Drills Little Lions, 56-12

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – While the two teams split a handful of closely contested bouts, the Central Mountain wrestling team had way too much horsepower for visiting State College, the host Wildcats piling up a Monday night 56-12 win.

State wasn’t helped by the four forfeits the Little Lions yielded. The win put CM at 9-1 on the year, State dropping to 1-9. The competition gets tougher for the Wildcats Wednesday, a rematch at home with Mifflin County (9-4). Central Mountain already owns a 40-24 win over the Huskies in the final of the Dallastown Duals on Jan. 13.

Best bout of Monday’s win, from a Wildcat perspective, was Asher Corl’s last second 5-4 win over State’s Ian Barr. Barr (9-4), a state qualifier a year ago, picked up a third period reversal to gain a 4-3 lead, only to have Corl, now 19-5, hit a late reversal for the victory. ā€˜Cat coach Biff Walizer praised Corl for the effort, stating the winning reversal was all about ā€œnever quittingā€ and that ā€œsometimes good things will happen.ā€ For Corl, they did.

After Corl’s win at 160, teammate Tanner Weaver took the mat at 170 pounds and was pushed by the Little Lions’ solid freshman, Lance Urbas (15-5). Weaver (21-4) picked up three takedowns on the way to a 9-5 win.

Two Wildcats picked up falls, Logan Long (19-6) with a deck job at 138 pounds and Alonzo Henry (2-5) at 152 pounds. Henry has taken over the 152 pound slot as starter Austyn Carson has seen his season end due to a knee injury. Henry was put on his back early by SC’s Isaiah Lose and trailed 7-1 in the first period. But the Wildcat junior reversed and pinned Lose at the 1:59 mark of the first period. Afterwards coach Walizer lauded Henry’s effort in fighting off his back.

The Wildcats had two bout terminations: Seth Andrus (21-3), a 20-4 victory in 3:57, followed by Cody Coleman (16-8) by a 19-3 score in 4:16. For Andrus it was his 98th career win.

Other CM winners were Jason Rinker (5-3) with a 12-4 major at 106 pounds and the four forfeit winners: Davis Seyler (3-4) at 126, Austin Confer (11-11) at 182, Mahlik Houtz (12-7) at 220 and Jake Edwards (18-4) at heavyweight.

The Central Mountain junior high stayed undefeated on the season with a 57-19 win.
