Wildcats Sweep Dallastown Duals, Upset No. 10 Cumberland Valley

DALLASTOWN – The Central Mountain wrestling team made its first-ever appearance at Saturday’s Dallastown Duals a memorable one.

The No. 22 ranked Wildcats swept to a 3-for-3 dual meet performance, including a semifinal win over No. 10 Cumberland Valley by a 34-29 score, followed by a championship round victory over No. 19 Mifflin County, 40-24. The showing also included a 43-21 first round win over Cocalico.

The showing left Central Mountain at 7-1 on the year as they bounced back from a relatively lackluster performance earlier in the week, a 46-24 win over an improved Midd-West team.

Head coach Biff Walizer and his staff were less than pleased after the Midd-West showing and reports from the newly-named Holland Wrestling Room were that squad members were pushed hard. They responded big time at Dallastown, Walizer praising the entire team’s performance, what he called “the best we’ve looked…a good day’s work.”

Heroes were multiple up and down the lineup, some with clutch wins, some with preventing bonus points. Four Wildcats went 3-0 on the day: Logan Long (17-6) at 145 pounds, Asher Corl (17-5) at 160, Tanner Weaver (19-4) at 170 and Jake Edwards (16-4) at heavyweight.

The most exciting dual was the win over Cumberland Valley, the top-ranked team in District 3. The Wildcats fell behind early, trailing 17-7 midway through. But Corl picked up a fall and Weaver was awarded a forfeit and CM had the lead at 19-17.

Cumberland Valley had moved their state-ranked freshman Jacob Lucas (24-3) away from Weaver and Lucas drew Wildcat freshman Gage Sutliff (3-3). Sutliff hung with the favored CV wrestler, 4-4 after two periods. Sutliff gave Lucas an uncontested escaped to start the final period and trailed 5-4 and went to work for a go-ahead takedown. But the Bucktail High School frosh got caught on the attempt, pinned by Lucas, putting CV back up 23-19.

Sutliff’s effort, as coach Walizer later noted, ignited the Wildcat bench. Fellow Bucktail product Tanner Riggle followed with a clutch overtime fall when the bout score was 10-10 and the Wildcats regained the lead at 25-23. When Mahlik Houtz followed with a decision win and Edwards followed with a first period deck job the Wildcats clinched the dual meet with a 34-23 lead and one bout to go.

The 40-24 championship bout win over Mifflin County lacked the intensity of the Cumberland Valley match, but the Wildcats were workmanlike in taking nine of the 14 bouts, including pins from Long, Corl, Weaver and Houtz.

The Wildcat Junior High team cruised to the junior high crown, going 3-0 including a 54-34 takedown of Cumberland Valley in the finals.

The Wildcats now get set for a home match Tuesday, Jan 16 with State College (1-6).
