Wildcats Romp 68-6 Over Seals

Next is Key D6 Matchup with BEA, Friday

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Thursday night’s Central Mountain home match was anticipated as a tune-up for a Friday showdown at Bald Eagle Area and that turned out to be the case, the Wildcats piling up nine pins on the way to a 68-6 win over Selinsgrove.

The victory put Central Mountain at 2-0, the same mark as a much improved Bald Eagle Area team; the two squads will clash at Wingate Friday night at 7 o’clock.

Central Mountain made quick work of the Seals, getting pins at the first four weights and ultimately opening a 62-0 lead before Selinsgrove freshman phenom Nate Schon (7-0) picked up his team’s only win, catching the Wildcats’ Mahlik Houtz (3-4) in a first period throw for a fall at 220 pounds. Best bout of the night belonged to another Seal freshman, Coy Bastian (5-2). He picked up two takedowns in regulation against Wildcat veteran Asher Corl at 160 pounds. But Corl (9-4) battled back with a third period reversal for a 5-5 tie and scored a reversal in the second overtime period for a 7-5 victory.

Otherwise the Wildcats breezed. In a dual that started at 106 pounds, CM stormed out of the gates: falls from Anson Zimmerman (2-4), Johnny Shreffler (7-3), Dalton Bechdel (8-4), first-time starter Davis Seyler (1-0) and then a major from Seth Andrus (10-1). Three more falls followed, from Cody Coleman (8-3), Logan Long (10-2) and Austyn Carson (6-5).

After Corl’s win at 160, Tanner Weaver (9-3) had a deck job, followed by an Austin Confer (4-5) 11-5 decision. Next up was junior Tanner Riggle (6-4) who a year ago was pinned in the first period by the Seals’ Blaise Zeiders. Riggle got his revenge this year with a 10-2 major decision. Central Mountain junior Jake Edwards (9-1) continued his outstanding first year as a starter, ending the night with the Wildcats’ ninth fall.

Central Mountain had a 29-5 edge in takedowns. They now own Heartland Conference wins over Shamokin 63-6 and Selinsgrove 68-6. But Friday at BEA will be a completely different challenge. Head coach Biff Walizer said toss-up bouts will be a key and called the match-up with the Eagles a “good early season test.” He lauded the strides BEA has made of late under second year coach Ron Guenot, stating “The match is a good close rivalry and it’s nice to see BEA coming back.” Wrestling fans will have a better idea how far back they have come starting at 7 p.m. on Friday. The varsity meet will be preceded by side-by-side junior high/elementary matches.

The Central Mountain junior high team stayed undefeated Thursday with an 82-4 win over the junior Seals. Other Thursday night varsity scores included Mifflin County 46, State College 29; and Cumberland Valley 32, Central Dauphin 25.
