Lady Bucks Open at Williamson

By Jim Morgan

FARWELL – A new season is here and coach Carl Gentzyel is looking at a small team in height. Coach Gentzyel is blessed with a 5’8″ or maybe a 5’9″ girl on his roster this year. He knows that his team needs to know that they will need to run the floor and most important is boxing out for rebounds. The Lady Bucks will not be able to afford giving up second and third chances to opponents.

Gentzyel told The Record, “We have very little experience on the floor this season.” Returning lettermen from last year are seniors Maria D’Onofrio, Anna Cowfer and Taylor Werts along with sophomores Emily Cross and Myka Poorman. D’Onofrio has the most experience on the floor by far. The other four saw the floor on the varsity level for the first time last season. So it’s safe in saying that the Lady Bucks are going to be young and rebuilding this season.

Looking to help these lettermen are senior Makenzi Brennan, juniors Sarah Rathmell and Aaliyah McGowan and sophomores Emma Intallura and Sara Kepler. There will be a number of players trying to break into that line-up, including sophomores Bonnie Mills, Megan Wagner, Carlie Gentzyel and Melissa Nucci. Adding these freshman to the list are Christine Delatorre, Lexus Laubach, Zoey Stroup and Rachael McCloskey.

The Lady Bucks are loaded with forwards compared to guards on the team as the forwards are going to have to run the floor in order to win as Coach Gentzyel plans on rotating a lot of them in and out. He may even look to run his offense with four guards in order to pick the pace up on offense and defense.

The Lady Bucks will open Friday night at the Williamson Tip-Off tournament as they face the host team Williamson at 6 p.m.
