PennDOT Posts More Bridge Weight Restrictions

LOCK HAVEN – PennDOT recently posted weight limits on a Route 64 bridge in Porter Township. The bridge spans Big Fishing Creek near the village of Lamar.

A PennDOT release said the bridge is now posted for 36 tons for single vehicles and 40 tons for combination vehicles. The Lamar Bridge was built in 1940, is 118 feet long, and carries an average of almost 6,000 vehicles daily, 6 percent of which is truck traffic.

Vehicles exceeding the posted weight limits will need to avoid the bridge and will be required to use a detour. PennDOT said the detour is significant in length and makes use of I-80, I-99/220, and Route 26.

Last August PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch authorized the transportation department to add or increase weight restrictions to about 1,000 structurally deficient bridges statewide. He said reducing the weight traveling on these bridges will slow their deterioration and preserve safety until repairs or replacement can occur.
