For the The Record – March 6, 2013

The quicksand mystery …

Is quicksand for real? That’s a question I’ve been pondering this week. From what I gather, I’m not sure why but one never knows what might trigger pangs of curiosity. I’m not alone wondering about quicksand. I asked several learned people about it this week. Everyone I asked has heard of it, one person said there is quicksand in Pennsylvania. However, no one knew of any documented cases of people being sucked alive by quicksand. That might only happen in old movies.

The question came to my mind me over lunch earlier this week when Tim Horner appeared with lists of the movies made by film greats John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Jack Nicholson. John Wayne made more movies than any of the others. If I remember correctly he made his first movie was in 1926, two years before talkies arrived in 1928.

PRR group to meet March 11 …

Renovo’s PRR group will be holding a meeting on March 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Yesterday’s Restaurant on Third Street. The PRR group has been very busy in recent months making plans for a spring cleanup. They are hoping to get a large turnout for the March 11 meeting. They’re also hoping to get a good response from area residents and from area municipal leaders and be able to share ideas for projects that will be beneficial to all.

Stay alert …

A reader reminds motorists to stay just alert when driving in the areas of frequent rock slides. As the snow melts and ground thaws – it’s bound to warm up one of these days, – the rocks come down onto the roadway. That always makes for a dangerous situation, especially in areas of heavy truck traffic.

Maybe spring is around the corner …

Thank heavens the snow is beginning to melt. The terrible cold is still with, but I have to admit the dingy brown of sun-starved grass is a welcome sight. Almost anything is better than a foot of snow coating the landscape. I know the weather forecasters are predicting a colder than normal March and so far it has been. But, spring has to follow soon, doesn’t it? When you think about everything is late this year. Ash Wednesday even waited until March 5.

Winter wildlife …

I heard about a week ago that someone had seen a bear. It seems early to be seeing bear already, especially because of how cold it has been. It occurs to me that I haven’t seen any deer in my neighborhood recently. The squirrels are just about the only wildlife I see these days. And they’re usually in the bird feeder. And no wonder, I found this really appetizing looking bird feed at Calico Creek. It‘s loaded with a variety of tasty treats including cashew nuts. The birds really like it and as I mentioned so do the squirrels.

Strength training …

A strength training program for women program that’s about to get under way drew a good response at Bucktail Medical Center this week. The program is sponsored by Penn State.
