LOCK HAVEN — When classes resume at Lock Haven University on Jan. 23 Chance Marsteller wants to be back on campus and ultimately a part of the Bald Eagle wrestling team.

Marsteller is a former four-time PIAA wrestling champion from Kennard-Dale High School in York County who ran afoul of the law during his time at LHU last summer. He had been arrested for aggravated assault charges in late August based on off-campus and Lock Haven Hospital emergency room incidents.

There was also a charge of public drunkenness after a reported blood alcohol content of .274 and traces of cocaine and marijuana in his system.

According to a story in the York Daily News, Marsteller said shortly after his run-in with the law he returned to his Fawn Grove home and completed a one month rehabilitation program, followed by two months of intensive out-patient rehab; he told the paper once he completes the court process in Clinton County, he could have to undergo additional rehabilitation treatment.

The newspaper story said “the road back includes a scheduled court appearance” in Clinton County Court on Monday of this week, although a county source told therecord-online he believes that appearance has been continued.

Meanwhile Marsteller is serving as a volunteer assistant junior high wrestling coach at Kennard-Dale, his services approved by the Kennard-Dale school board. Marsteller told the York paper he is ready to pay his dues as part of the process to get back to Lock Haven: “I’m going to be coming back, paying my way back. I gotta dot my I’s, cross my T’s and do everything right before they’re going to allow me back on the team. I’ve got to show them that this is what I really want to do. Which it is.”

Marsteller was undefeated in his high school career with a 166-0 record and was the USA Today National High School Wrestler of the Year in 2014. He spent two years at Oklahoma State but left, telling the York paper the Cowboy program “wasn’t a great fit for me and I found that out.”

He came to Lock Haven last spring and had been training on campus until the August incident. He said he has been in touch with the LHU wrestling program about resuming his wrestling career next season; his goal to return to school this upcoming semester to prove himself in hopes of rejoining the Bald Eagle squad for the 2017-18 academic year. Marsteller was back on campus in November for the school’s annual Mat-Town Tournament and easily claimed a title.
