LHU wrestling rallies past Maryland, edged by Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team opened dual-match action today at the Cavalier Duals and the Bald Eagles split a pair of matches. Lock Haven rallied for a 20-18 win over Maryland in the day’s opener and LHU looked poised for another comeback-win vs. host-Virginia, but the Cavaliers held on a for a 24-16 victory.
In the thrilling win over Maryland, the Bald Eagles won 6 of 10 bouts, including the final four as they rallied past the Terps.
The win over Maryland marked Lock Haven’s second over a Big Ten opponent in as many tries. Last season (February 12, 2016), LHU beat Michigan State.
In the loss to UVA, the Bald Eagles picked up four wins including the last three of the match.
Jake Field (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy), Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco), Tyler Wood(West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley), Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Ohio State) accounted for Lock Haven’s wins in the victory over Maryland to open the day.
Hazel and Haines capped perfect 2-0 days after recording wins vs. Virginia. Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Adam Mackie (Bechtelsville, Pa./Brandywine Heights) also recorded victories vs. UVA.
Hazel’s two wins today move him to a perfect 10-0 on the season.
LHU opened the day with Maryland, and wins by Field and Perry at 125 and 141, respectively, which had the Bald Eagles up 7-6 after three bouts.
Field (125) was dominant in his 2016-17 debut and picked up a 12-2 major decision over Maryland’s Michael Beck. After Perry’s hard-fought 6-1 win at 141, Maryland won three straight, including a pin to take a commanding 18-7 lead after six bouts.
Thanks to Wood, Hazel, Sponseller and Haines, the Bald Eagles rattled off four wins in the remaining four bouts and picked up the victory. Trailing 18-17, Haines put the match away with an 8-1 victory at 285, giving him a big win and the team the victory, 20-18.
Despite losses in the dual with Maryland, LHU gained momentum from the efforts of Kyle Shoop(Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and Siegrist. Shoop nearly came from a big deficit and took down Maryland’s Alfred Bannister, ranked No. 17 at 149, but Bannister held on for a 9-7 victory. Seigrist fought off a first-period pin at 165, before being edged 8-6.
Virginia jumped on Lock Haven early and the Bald Eagles found themselves trailing 21-0 after the opening five bouts. In three of those five wins, UVA picked up bonus points in three matches including at 141 where No. 9 George DiCamillo took down Perry in a battle of two of the nation’s best at the weight class.
In the loss to Virginia, Siegrist, Hazel, Mackie and Haines all won. All four of the wins came in the final five bouts as The Haven did all it could to rally for the second straight dual.
Siegrist, a freshman, came roaring back and earned a takedown with just three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. In overtime he earned the fall and a huge six points for LHU.
Hazel and Mackie both won by decision, Haines was simply too much for Virginia’s Tyler Love in a workmanlike effort that led to a lopsided 15-1 major decision.
The Bald Eagles will now turn their focus to Michigan State. Lock Haven will host the Spartans on Saturday, November 26. LHU’s 2016-17 home-opener is set for a 5 p.m. start. Last season, LHU beat Michigan State 18-15 for the school’s first-ever win over the Spartans and LHU’s first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2002.
Prior to the home-opening dual with Michigan State, LHU will host a Free Community Youth Clinic. More information is available at www.GoLHU.com.
