WOOLRICH — The occupant of a Park Avenue home blames a discarded cigarette for a morning fire which destroyed her residence.

Sonja Barner said she had been on her back deck smoking a cigarette and dumped the ashes into a garbage can and apparently “something was not out.”

Barner said she went back inside her frame home at the north end of Park Avenue. She said she was eating toast in the living room when she heard crackling and popping at the rear of the building. She opened the back door and observed the picnic table and deck in flames; at that point, she said, the dining room windows were popping out. She grabbed a nearby phone and called 911 and escaped with her dog as flames engulfed the structure.

She said her son Park Barner IV had already gone to school when the fire occurred about 7:30 a.m. this morning. Fire companies from all over the Woolrich/Avis/Lock Haven area responded. The loss was reported covered by insurance.
