Maria Morgan United Way Sports Person of the Year
MACKEYVILLE — These are a great couple days for the Sue and Jim Morgan family of South Renovo.
Daughter Maria was honored tonight as the first female recipient of the Clinton County United Way’s Sports Person of the Year Award. The presentation was made by Bob Thompson, local United Way board vice-president. He lauded Morgan for her “commitment to excellence and her proven success as a multi-talented athlete.”
Morgan is the all-time scoring leader for Clinton County high school basketball players, male or female. She was a three-time all-state performer at Bucktail High School and this week finished her freshman year at St. Vincent College of Latrobe. Morgan played in all 28 games at St. Vincent, starting 10 games and averaging 5.8 points per game.
She talked of her first year college experience and thanked the community for its support of her during her high school years.
The occasion was the 5th annual United Way Sports Night & Fine Arts Auction at the Belles Springs Country Barn. The Morgan family table included Maria’s brother A. J., also a standout athlete at Bucktail High School. He will graduate tomorrow from Lycoming College tomorrow with a degree in accounting.
