Wildcats Outpace West Branch 42-20
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — If anyone feared a letdown for the Central Mountain wrestling team after its first loss, the Wildcats erased those fears in a hurry, bolting to a 30-9 lead and downing a solid West Branch team by a 42-20 score Wednesday night.
The victory moved the Wildcats to 12-1 and came on the heels of their 39-16 loss to Mifflin County in the District 6 team duals final last Saturday. West Branch, ranked number 23 in the state among small schools, fell to 19-5.
The dual started at 113 pounds and Geo Barzona (24-2) picked up his team-leading 12th fall in the first period, the 75th career win for the Wildcat junior. Central Mountain recorded four pins in all, including back-to-back first period deck jobs from Brandon Miller (13-12) and Caleb Tuner (12-6). The fourth fall also was in the first period and came from Hunter Weaver (25-3).
Colton Weaver (22-7) received an injury default win and Isaac Porter (21-5) was awarded a forfeit. Decisions were turned in by Seth Andrus (18-9) and Logan Long (18-11). Even those who were defeated, coach Biff Walizer noted afterwards, battled their West Branch opponents.
CM took eight of the 14 weights and won the junior high meet 79-15. Wildcat seniors recognized before the dual were Hunter Weaver, Porter, Greg Stahl, Bryce Bitner, Noah Long, Eli Bechdel and David Petruzzi, along with manager Karli Walizer.
Next up is a trip next Tuesday to Hollidaysburg and a Big 7/Heartland Conference showdown next Friday, Feb. 19 at Jersey Shore. After that it will be a one-day District 6 tourney at Altoona on Saturday, Feb. 27.
