Wildcats Takedown Shik 43-22

Central Mountain Remains Unbeaten at 7-0

cm-wrestlingBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – The Central Mountain wrestling team, looking for a challenge after an easy run through its early January competition, got pushed by the Shikellamy Braves tonight. But coach Biff Walizer’s team responded, riding five falls and a clutch upset from heavyweight Bryce Bitner as part of a 43-22 Wildcat win.

The win left Central Mountain at 7-0 and guaranteed the Wildcats the number one seed for the District Six team dual championships Saturday, Feb. 6 at Tyrone. The loss for Shikellamy put the Braves at 14-4.

The Wildcats fell behind early in a dual starting at 152 pounds, trailing 10-0 until Caleb Turner (9-3) picked up a second period fall to put the home team on the scoreboard, down 10-6. Shik upped the lead to 13-6 with a Josh Krieger 6-5 win over CM’s Greg Stahl (5-7). But Central Mountain would win five straight bouts to open things up.

The ‘Catd started their run with first period falls from Isaac Porter (16-4) and Hunter Weaver (19-3). Then came Bitner’s 2-1 overtime win over state ranked (#19) Brave heavyweight Jeremy Bacon. Bitner, outweighed by more than 50 pounds, traded regulation escapes with the Shik heavy, then used an overtime escape and last period ride-out for the win. The victory put Bitner at 16-8 and dropped Bacon to 18-3.

Cody Coleman (8-6) followed with a major at 106 and Geo Barzona (16-2) picked up nine takedowns before getting a final period pin. At that point Central Mountain led 31-13. Shik would make a run with a fall from John Supsic at 120 pounds and a fiercely contested 10-4 win for state-ranked (#20) Nick Gittens (20-2) over Seth Andrus (13-8); the score at that point 31-22 in favor of Central Mountain.

The Wildcats would take the final three bouts to win going away: Logan Long (15-8) and Colton Weaver (with a mark of 17-6 and down to 138 pounds for the first time this season) picked up regular decisions and Asher Corl (7-8) closed out the scoring with a second period fall to set the final at 43-22.

Central Mountain had a 23-11 edge in takedowns and took 9 of the 14 bouts. The junior high team also win by a 55-33 score over their Shik counterparts.

Central Mountain will be back in action Thursday at Bellefonte (10-5) and an afternoon match Saturday at State College (7-10).
