4-0 Wildcats Whitewash Shamokin
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — Wrestling fans expected a mismatch when the undefeated Central Mountain wrestling team hosted winless Shamokin Saturday afternoon.
And that’s what they got: a 46 minute dual meet which saw the Wildcats come out on top by a 73-0 count, piling up four pins, six forfeits, one major decision and three regular decisions. The undermanned Shamokin team came to Central Mountain with no junior high team, no jayvees and a young varsity team, several of their eight suited up wrestlers just coming off injuries.
Wildcat pins were recorded by Geo Barzona (15-2), Brandon Miller (10-9), Caleb Turner (6-3) and Greg Stahl (3-6). The major decision was recorded by Hunter Weaver (8-0).
The best bout of the afternoon came at 126 pounds between sophomores Seth Andrus (11-7) for the Wildcats and Devin Pietkiewicz (13-4) for the Indians. They were tied 5-5 after two periods but Andrus picked up a winning takedown in period three.
Other regular decision winners were Tanner Weaver (13-8) and Bryce Bitner (14-7). Awarded forfeits were Dalton Bechdel (4-3), Cody Coleman (7-6), Logan Long (12-8), Asher Corl (5-7) and Isaac Porter (13-4).
The win put Central Mountain at 4-0 on the season and preserved their number one ranking in the District 6 team dual standings, leading up to the district team dual tourney Feb. 6 in Tyrone. Shamokin dropped to 0-6.
Next up for Central Mountain are two more home Heartland Conference/District 4 foes, Shikellamy next Tuesday and Williamsport next Thursday.
Also on Saturday, Mifflin County fell to Cumberland Valley by a 46-19 score. The latest PA Wrestling rankings have Cumberland Valley as number six in the state, Central Mountain at 17 and Mifflin County at 18.
