Lock Haven Police Department News:
High-Tech Auto Theft: An Emerging Threat
Auto theft is evolving with new technology, and methods such as car hacking, hijacking, and key fob cloning are on the rise. Unlike traditional theft, these high-tech crimes often do not require any forced entry. As more vehicles rely on key fobs and keyless entry systems, criminals have learned how to exploit these features by purchasing easily obtainable devices that connect them to a vehicle’s computer system, enabling them to create their own key fob. This allows a thief to steal a vehicle silently and swiftly. Pennsylvania communities have begun to see an increase in this type of crime, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
How can you prevent theft?
- Lock your car and take your keys with you every time.
- Use a theft deterrent device. There are several options to enhance your vehicle’s security:
- If your car is equipped with an alarm, make sure to use it.
- Use a steering wheel lock. These visible devices can deter thieves by making it clear that your car is protected, encouraging them to pass by and move on to another vehicle.
To protect against keyless entry theft:
- Never leave your key fob near the front door or windows where a criminal can interfere with its signal from outside your home.
- Store your key fob in a Faraday bag at night or when not in use. A Faraday bag is a pouch or case that blocks electromagnetic fields, preventing thieves from accessing or amplifying the signal of your key fob or any other device placed in the bag.
- Use an OBD lock. The On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port—typically located under the dashboard—gives access to your vehicle’s electronic systems. An OBD lock encloses this port and prevents any devices from being inserted without first unlocking the cap of the box. Even if they are able to break in, an OBD lock prevents thieves from stealing the car.
Who should consider using an OBD lock?
- Owners of vehicles that are common targets for theft, such as models that are frequently stolen or luxury vehicles.
- Drivers who frequently park in public places or park on the street overnight.
- Businesses with fleet vehicles that may be at risk of theft or tampering.
- Anyone looking for an added layer of vehicle security.
