Optimist’s Roundtable
By Martha Sykes
In Deuteronomy 32:7, it tells us to “Remember the days of old, consider the years gone by.”
Proverbs 10:7 states “The memory of the righteous is a blessing.”
Among my many beliefs, I do believe that memories are a gift from God. When someone we love passes away, our memories are certainly a comfort to us in our journey of grief. We have all probably experienced brief in some way in our lives. When I think about making memories, the first thing that comes to my mind is the many albums and pictures that I have to help me remember.
This week is a bittersweet one for me. It was a beautiful Flaming Foliage weekend to see friends and relatives, and I was able to watch the parade for the first time in many years. The Mummers in the parade reminded me of the happy memories of seeing my uncle and aunts dancing with them in the parades years ago. For many years, we would all get together on fifth street and watch the parade with all of my relatives and it was so much fun remembering those happy times.
On this Saturday, I will remember my loving husband, Wesley, as it would have been our 50th wedding anniversary. We talked many times about looking forward to celebrating those 50 years together, but God had different plans and life goes on. My memories of our years together are priceless and I thank God every day for being with me on this journey without my husband.
Every day we are reminded that our lives can change in a moment’s time, so those pictures and memories are treasures to us when our loved ones are gone from our sight, but forever in our hearts. My prayer is that God has blessed you with many happy memories!!
