More Traffic Pattern Changes Coming for Rt. 220

Drivers Should Be Alert for Traffic Pattern Changes at Mill Hall Interchange

pdot2LOCK HAVEN – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is advising drivers that a new traffic pattern change is coming on its Route 220 improvement job near Lock Haven. Starting Monday, June 1, drivers will encounter changes at the Route 220/Mill Hall interchange. In order to perform bridge work, northbound ramp traffic will cross over to a southbound lane. This means one lane will be open for each direction of ramp traffic. Flaggers will be in the roadway on Monday as these changes are implemented. Drivers should proceed with caution through this work zone. Guide rail has been removed in this area and channelizing devices are in place.

Once northbound bridge work has been completed later this summer, southbound bridge work will take place. PennDOT will issue an update prior to that traffic change.

An alternate traffic pattern remains in place for the Route 220 northbound on-ramp from Route 477. Through June 9, northbound traffic moving from Route 477 to Route 220, will turn left instead of following the curved on-ramp to the right. This allows traffic to remain on Route 477 before merging onto Route 220. Drivers should be alert for signage directing them away from the on-ramp and toward the alternate pattern. This temporary change is necessary so crews can repair the exiting northbound on-ramp. Should work progress allow, PennDOT will remove the restriction before June 9.

Long term lane restrictions remain in place through the entire 7.5 miles of the project, stretching from south of Lock Haven north to Pine Creek. Drivers will need to remain alert for extra construction traffic as paving along the mainline takes place over the next month. The left/passing lanes are closed each direction through this entire area.

Begun in 2014, repairs will improve the ride quality of the roadway surface and extend the useful life of the pavement. The work was made possible by Act 89.

Work includes patching and overlay, bridge repairs, guide rail updates, shoulder work, strip seal dams and miscellaneous items. Ramps at Salona, Mill Hall, Lock Haven, McElhattan, and Avis will also see improvements along with improvements on a small section of Route 477 (Long Run Road) near Salona and bridge work on Route 2015 (Mill Hall Road) near Mill Hall.

HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $16.9 million project, which is expected to be complete by mid-October. PennDOT reminds motorists to use caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
